With me
Moses said to the Lord, ‘See, you have said to me, “Bring up this people”; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, “I know you by name, and you have also found favour in my sight.” Now if I have found favour in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favour in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.’
Something to think about
If were to scroll through the list of ‘groups’ I am a part of on Facebook, you’d find something of a timeline of my interests over the last decade or so. When I started university, I joined student groups for my college, my cohort, my subject. When I was exploring my identity, I joined Christian LGBTQ groups. Then there were groups of writers, groups about losing weight, groups for training a puppy, groups with tips on slow-cookers and air fryers, and every local community I’ve lived in. Right now, I’m part of groups for clergy, parents, and people reducing food waste – a snap shot of my current priorities!
Although online groups are a modern phenomenon, the human need for community and support is nothing new. Moses had a unique calling and in many ways a unique relationship with God. But despite – or perhaps because of – the task he faced, Moses knew that he couldn’t go it alone. ‘You have not let me know whom you will send with me’ is a bold statement before God, laying out his need for co-workers and friends.
If we find ourselves lonely in the labours set before us, we can be proactive in seeking out support, whether online or locally. Encouraged by Moses, we might also ask God who he plans to send us!
